I am not a beer connoisseur. . . yet. I was deep in one of my day brewdreams today and I got a little glimpse of the direction I'm heading. When I interview for residencies, I'm going to get the question "So, what do you do outside of medschool?" Will I answer, I'm a beer connoisseur?? Could anyone who hasn't stood where we as new homebrewers stand understand what that means?
I don't want to get selfrighteous about this, but I am. We went to dinner with my wife's parents, and I usually get a beer. They didn't have a beer list, nothing on tap, and I panicked and ordered my former old stand-by Newcastle. I was appalled!! This used to be my darker beer, and I did not enjoy it at all. It's smooth and has good mouthfeel but has a decidedly uninteresting bitterness and grainbill. I think I'm switching to Guinness with the inlaws.
On a lighter note, would Newcastle Ale Ice Cream be good?

Hopefully this is just a phase...Newcastle is way to good of a beer to cast aside. But I do think that we can make something that is better than Newcastle.
Sorry, my point was not that it is a "bad beer" like my tag indicates. It just isn't as good as it used to be. . . it tasted watery and lacked character. I'll order it again, but I won't be excited about getting it.
